How to do it
Drag a window to the left or right edge until a highlighted area appears, then release.
Or hover the green button at the top left of the window and choose a half or a quarter.
Or choose Window > Move & Resize and pick a layout.
To turn edge dragging off, go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Windows and disable dragging windows to the screen edge.
Hold the Option key while dragging if you want the tile to happen without waiting for the highlight. That option is also in the same Windows section of Desktop & Dock.
Other ways to do it
Rectangle App
Pick it if you want thirds, a wide-monitor layout, or a shortcut for every position. It's free.
Stick with this tip if halves and quarters are all you need.
Split View Built in
Pick it if you want two apps full screen with nothing else showing. Hover over the green button and pick a full-screen tile.
Stick with this tip if you want to keep the menu bar, the Dock and other windows around.
Questions people ask
Do I still need an app like Rectangle?
Not for halves and quarters. Rectangle still helps if you want more layouts and your own shortcuts, or if the Mac is on a macOS older than Sequoia.
How do I stop windows tiling by accident?
Go to System Settings > Desktop & Dock > Windows and turn off dragging windows to the screen edge.
