How to put two windows side by side

Do I still need an app like Rectangle?

Not for halves and quarters. Rectangle still helps if you want more layouts and your own shortcuts, or if the Mac is on a macOS older than Sequoia.

Why don't snap layouts appear?

Snap may be off. Turn on Snap windows in Settings > System > Multitasking.
