Your Android can stop at 80% to save the battery

How to limit charging to 80 percent on Android

On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Charging optimization and choose Limit to 80%. On a Samsung, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection (under More battery settings on some versions) and pick Maximum, which stops at 80%.

How to do it

  1. On a Pixel, open Settings > Battery > Charging optimization.

  2. Choose Limit to 80%.

  3. On a Samsung, open Settings > Battery > Battery protection (on some versions it's under More battery settings) and choose Maximum.

  4. Plug in as usual. The phone stops at 80% and shows that charging is limited.

My last phone's battery was worn out in two years from charging to 100% every night. This one stops at 80% and I've never once run out during the day.

If you have a long day or a flight coming, switch the limit off the night before and charge to full. Put it back the next day.

The setting names move around between Android versions, so if the path doesn't match, search Settings for 'charging'.

Other ways to do it

  • Adaptive Charging Built in

Pick it if you want 100% in the morning but don't want the phone sitting full all night.

Stick with this tip if you're fine starting the day on 80% for the healthiest battery.

  • Unplug at 80% yourself By hand

Pick it if your phone has no limit option.

Stick with this tip if your phone has the setting. It never forgets.

Questions people ask

I don't see Charging optimization on my Pixel.

It arrived with Android 15. On older versions, Adaptive Charging under Settings > Battery holds the phone at 80% overnight and finishes just before your alarm.

Can I charge to 100% for a long day?

Yes. Switch the limit off before you plug in, or choose Adaptive (Pixel) or Basic/Adaptive (Samsung) for that night, then switch it back.

Will I notice less battery during the day?

You start with 20% less, so on a heavy day you might. Most people get through the day fine on 80%.

Is this the same as the iPhone 80% limit?

Same idea. iPhones have it under Settings > Battery > Charging.

My phone isn't a Pixel or a Samsung.

Search Settings for 'battery protection' or 'charging'. OnePlus, Xiaomi and others have their own version, sometimes called Smart charging.
