Missed the call on silent again? Your iPhone can blink its light instead

How to turn on flash notifications on iPhone

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > LED Flash for Alerts and turn it on, then turn on Flash in Silent Mode if your phone lives on silent. On iOS 26 the row is called Flash for Alerts, and you can pick the LED, the screen or both.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings > Accessibility.

  2. Under Hearing, tap Audio & Visual.

  3. Scroll down, tap LED Flash for Alerts and turn it on. On iOS 26 it's called Flash for Alerts.

  4. Turn on Flash in Silent Mode. Turn on Flash While Unlocked too if you want it while you're using the phone.

My phone is on silent most of the day and usually face down next to the laptop. I used to find missed calls an hour later. Now the light on the back blinks and I catch it out of the corner of my eye.

It sits in Accessibility because it was made for people who can't hear the ringtone. It's just as handy in a loud office, or with a phone on silent while the kids nap.

One warning: it blinks for every notification, not only calls. If a group chat gets busy, mute that chat or the flashing gets old fast.

Other ways to do it

  • Screen flash Built in

Pick it if your phone usually lies face up. On iOS 26, choose Screen under Flash for Alerts and the display blinks instead of the camera light.

Stick with this tip if the phone lies face down, so the light on the back is the only thing you can see.

  • Vibrate on silent Built in

Pick it if the phone is in your pocket, where you'll feel a buzz but never see a light. Set Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics to Always Play.

Stick with this tip if the phone sits on a table or in a bag, where a buzz is easy to miss.

Questions people ask

Why doesn't it flash while I'm using the phone?

Out of the box it only flashes when the iPhone is locked. Turn on Flash While Unlocked on the same screen if you want it all the time.

Does it work when the phone is on silent?

Yes, as long as Flash in Silent Mode is on. That's the combination most people are after: no ringtone, but you still notice the call.

Can I make it flash only for calls?

No. It flashes for calls, messages and any notification that would normally make a sound. Mute the busy group chats, or use a Focus that only lets certain people through, and the flashing calms down.

Does it drain the battery?

Not in a way you'd notice. Each flash lasts a fraction of a second. Hundreds of notifications a day would add up a little, but for most people it makes no difference.

Is there the same thing on Android?

Yes. On a Pixel it's Settings > Accessibility > Flash notifications, with a camera flash and a screen flash option. On a Samsung Galaxy it's Settings > Accessibility > Advanced settings > Flash notification.
