That tick-tick-tick when you type? Turn it off

How to turn off keyboard clicks on iPhone

Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback and turn off Sound. If you'd like a tap you can feel instead, turn on Haptic on the same screen.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings and tap Sounds & Haptics.

  2. Tap Keyboard Feedback.

  3. Turn off Sound.

  4. Turn on Haptic if you want a silent tap you can feel for each key, or leave it off.

  5. While you're on Sounds & Haptics, Lock Sound is the switch for the click when you lock the phone.

I didn't notice the ticking until someone on a quiet train turned round. The ringer has to stay on for work calls, so silent mode wasn't an option. Keyboard Feedback, Sound off, done.

Haptic is worth trying. You feel each key without anyone else hearing it.

Third-party keyboards like Gboard ignore this switch and have their own sound setting.

Other ways to do it

  • Silent mode Built in

Pick it if you want everything quiet for a while, calls and notifications included.

Stick with this tip if you want calls to ring but typing to be silent.

  • Keyboard Haptic only Built in

Pick it if you miss the feedback once the sound is gone.

Stick with this tip if you want no feedback at all.

Questions people ask

Does the silent switch stop the clicks too?

Yes. With the phone on silent (the switch or the Action button), the keyboard doesn't click. The setting lets you keep the ringer on and still type quietly.

What does Haptic do?

It gives a tiny tap you feel under your thumb for each key, with no sound. Some people find it makes typing feel more accurate.

Does Haptic drain the battery?

A little. Apple says keyboard haptics can affect battery life, so leave it off if you're squeezing out every percent.

I turned Sound off and it still clicks in one app.

Some apps and third-party keyboards have their own sound setting. Check the keyboard app's settings.
