How to get better answers from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini
Prompt habits that work in all three, plus where each one keeps standing instructions. The goal is an answer you can check, not a longer one.
How to set Instructions for Claude
In Claude, click your initials at the lower left, choose Settings, and write how you want answers under Instructions for Claude. It applies to every chat.
Use it when: The rules for how you want to be answered apply to ordinary chats without being pasted every time.
How to use Temporary chat in ChatGPT
Start a new chat and turn on Temporary chat at the top before you type. It isn't saved to your history and doesn't update ChatGPT's memory.
Use it when: A one-off question stays out of your chat list and does not become a memory the next chat can see.
How to set custom instructions in ChatGPT
Open ChatGPT Settings > Personalization (or Customize ChatGPT), turn customization on, and write how you want answers. Start a new chat to see the change.
Use it when: Every new chat inherits the format you actually want, instead of the default essay.
How to ask ChatGPT for steps you can check
After you describe the job, add: "Give me numbered steps I can check on the screen. If a menu name might have changed, say so." Stop as soon as a step doesn't match what you see.
Use it when: A paragraph you cannot test is how a wrong setting gets recommended with confidence.
How to get ChatGPT to give the right settings steps for your phone
Start your question with your exact device and version, like "Pixel, Android 16" or "iPhone, iOS 26", and ask it to say when it isn't sure a menu still has that name.
Use it when: Menu names change between versions. A model that does not know yours will guess a plausible path.
How to set Instructions for Gemini
Open Gemini on the web, go to Settings and look for Instructions for Gemini. Write how you want answers. Work and school accounts often don't have the setting.
Use it when: You stop repeating how you want the answer shaped, on accounts where the setting exists.
How to use project instructions in Claude
Create a project from the Claude sidebar, write the rules for that work in its instructions field, and start chats from inside the project so the rules apply.
Use it when: Standing rules for one client or one repo stop showing up when you ask an unrelated question.
Questions people ask
How is this different from project instructions?
Project instructions only apply inside one project. These apply everywhere.
Is a temporary chat completely private?
No. OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety checks. Don't paste passwords or ID numbers.
Do custom instructions change old chats?
No. They only shape replies from now on.
What do I do when a step is wrong?
Tell it the labels you actually see and ask it to continue from there.
