Phone buzzes on every letter? Switch it off in Gboard

How to turn off keyboard vibration on Android

Open Gboard's settings (the gear in the keyboard's top row, or Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard), tap Preferences and turn off Haptic feedback on keypress. Turn off Sound on keypress on the same screen if it clicks too.

How to do it

  1. With the keyboard open, tap the gear icon in its top row. Or go to Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard > Gboard.

  2. Tap Preferences.

  3. Scroll to Key press and turn off Haptic feedback on keypress.

  4. Turn off Sound on keypress on the same screen if the keyboard clicks as well.

My partner pointed out that my phone buzzed like a wasp every time I replied to a message in bed. One switch in Gboard and it types silently now.

If the gear isn't in the keyboard's top row, tap the four squares icon first, or long-press the comma key on some versions.

Turning the buzz off doesn't affect calls or notifications, only typing.

Other ways to do it

  • Lower vibration strength Built in

Pick it if you like a bit of feedback, just not the hard buzz.

Stick with this tip if you want it gone completely.

  • Samsung Keyboard settings Built in

Pick it if your Samsung phone uses Samsung Keyboard instead of Gboard.

Stick with this tip if you type with Gboard, which most Android phones use.

Questions people ask

I use Samsung Keyboard, not Gboard.

Open Settings > General management > Samsung Keyboard settings > Swipe, touch, and feedback > Touch feedback, and turn off Vibration (and Sound if you want).

It still vibrates after I turned it off.

Some phones also have a system switch. Look in Settings > Sound & vibration > Vibration & haptics for a keyboard or touch feedback option and turn that off too.

Can I keep a lighter buzz instead of none?

Yes. In Gboard's Preferences, leave haptic feedback on and lower Vibration strength on keypress if your phone shows that slider.

Does this stop all vibration on the phone?

No. Calls, alarms and notifications still vibrate. This only changes the keyboard.
