How to set up text replacement on iPhone

Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement and tap +. Put the full text in Phrase and a short code like @@ in Shortcut. Type the code and a space, and the phone expands it.

How to do it

  1. Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Text Replacement.

  2. Tap the + button.

  3. Put the full text in Phrase. Put the code you want to type in Shortcut, for example @@ for your email address.

  4. Save, then try it in Notes. Type the shortcut and the space bar.

Pick a shortcut you would never type by accident. A single common word will fire in the middle of a sentence.

The same list shows up on a Mac under System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements, if both devices use the same Apple Account.

Questions people ask

Does text replacement sync to my Mac?

Yes, if both use the same Apple Account with iCloud. The list shows up under System Settings > Keyboard > Text Replacements.

What makes a good shortcut?

Something you'd never type by accident, like @@ or a doubled letter. A real word will fire in the middle of a sentence.

Why isn't my shortcut expanding?

It only expands after a space or punctuation. If it still doesn't work, delete the entry and add it again. The sync sometimes gets stuck.
